10 Days Rwenzori Trekking | Central Circuit Trail
This 10 days Rwenzori Trekking Adventure is built specifically for hiking the Rwenzori Mountains along the Central Circuit Trail, widely regarded as the most convenient and direct route to Margherita Peak, the highest point in Uganda and the third-highest peak in Africa. The trail starts from the Mihunga Gate at 1,651 meters and, while the stretch between the John Matte and Bujuku camps is consistently boggy, this is generally considered the shortest and easiest way to approach Margherita among the Rwenzori’s established routes.
Along the way, the circuit can lead you past Mount Baker, Mount Stanley, Mount Speke and, conditions permitting, the Weismann Peak, crossing five distinct vegetation zones that offer sweeping views of these peaks as the trail winds through both the lower and upper Bigo bogs, firmly supported by boardwalks for easier passage. The route runs from the Nyakalengija trailhead to Bujuku via Nyabitaba and John Matte, then on toward Scott-Elliot Pass, the Kitandara Lakes, and the Freshfield Pass into Bujuku Valley.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Your Hotel
On arrival in Kampala or Entebbe, you will be met by your driver-guide and transferred to your hotel to rest and prepare for the trek ahead.
Day 2: Transfer to Rwenzori Mountains National Park
After breakfast, your driver-guide will collect you for the journey to the Rwenzori Mountains in western Uganda, with an en-route lunch stop in Fort Portal. On arrival, check in and spend the night at the Ruboni Community Camp, a good base for final preparations before the trek begins.
Accommodation: Ruboni Community Camp
Day 3: First Day Hiking: Nyakalengija to Nyabitaba (2,650m)
After breakfast, you will begin your Rwenzori trek on the Nyakalengija Trail, covering a distance of around 10 kilometers. Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers will give you a short briefing before you set off through Bakonjo homesteads on the mountain’s steep lower slopes and banana plantations. The trail continues near the Mubuku River, crossing the Mahoma River before climbing progressively through forest to reach Nyabitaba Hut. Dinner and overnight stay at Nyabitaba Hut.
Accommodation: Nyabitaba Hut
Day 4: Trek to John Matte Hut (3,350m)
After breakfast, set off from Nyabitaba Hut along a narrow trail that descends to the Kurt Schafer Bridge, just before the confluence of the Bujuku and Mubuku Rivers. The forest gradually gives way to a bamboo zone where the trail turns slippery and moss-covered. Massive lobelia, groundsel and heather vegetation appear before you reach the Nyamileju rock shelter, and the trail crosses a swamp on the final approach to the hut. Dinner and overnight stay at John Matte Hut.
Accommodation: John Matte Hut

Day 5: Trek to Bujuku Hut (3,900m)
After breakfast, set off toward Bujuku Hut, with the trail descending to cross the Bujuku River before reaching the Lower Bigo Swamp, home to some of the range’s most striking giant lobelia. Cross the swamp to the Upper Bigo Swamp, then continue to Lake Bujuku, where clear days offer views of Mount Stanley’s uppermost reaches to the west. Dinner and overnight stay at Bujuku Hut.
Accommodation: Bujuku Hut
Day 6: Climb to Elena Hut (4,541m)
Set off from Bujuku after breakfast; the swampy path climbs the hills west of the lake through the striking groundsel-lined Scott-Elliot Gorge before reaching Scott-Elliot Pass at roughly 4,372 meters. A metal stepladder helps you across a particularly steep section, after which the trail splits: the right-hand path climbs a steep, rocky route to Elena Hut and Mount Stanley, while the left-hand path descends toward Lake Kitandara. Overnight at Elena Hut, at the foot of the Stanley Glacier.
Accommodation: Elena Hut
Day 7: Optional Summit of Mount Stanley (5,109m), Descend to Kitandara Hut
This is the trek’s decision point. For those not aiming for the summit, it’s a more relaxed day hiking down from Elena Hut (4,541m) to Lake Kitandara (4,023m). For trekkers who are well acclimatized, in good physical condition and prepared for a demanding push, the alternative is a further climb of roughly three hours to Margherita Peak (5,109m), the highest point in Uganda, via the Elena Glacier and the Stanley plateau, before descending to Kitandara Hut. The use of ropes and crampons is generally recommended for the summit attempt, and this is a genuinely serious day in the mountains, so only attempt it if your guide confirms conditions and your fitness are suitable.
On the way back down, you’ll pass Scott-Elliot Pass again, with views of Bujuku Lake and Mount Speke at close range, before descending to Lake Kitandara. Dinner and overnight stay at Kitandara Hut (4,023m).
Accommodation: Kitandara Hut
Day 8: Climb to Guy Yeoman Hut (3,260m)
After breakfast, hike from the base of Mount Baker over the Freshfield Pass toward the southern part of the Rwenzori range, a route of roughly 4 kilometers. On a clear day, you can see across to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the west and Mount Stanley to the north. From the boggy pass, the trail descends through the historic rock shelter at Bujongolo, the site of the pioneering 1906 Rwenzori expedition led by the Duke of Abruzzi. Dinner and overnight stay at Guy Yeoman Hut.
Accommodation: Guy Yeoman Hut
Day 9: Descend to Nyakalengija Trailhead, Drive Back to Kampala
After breakfast, pack up your equipment for the roughly 6-hour descent out of the Rwenzoris, passing Lake Mahoma and Nyabitaba through the heather zone and moss zone. This is the final stretch of the trek; on reaching the foothills, continue to your lodge to freshen up, have lunch, and take a well-earned afternoon rest before dinner and an overnight stay.
Day 10: Airport Transfer
After breakfast, set off for Kampala with an en-route lunch stop in Mbarara, arriving in the evening ahead of your flight. You will be transferred to Entebbe International Airport for your departure.

Frequently Asked Questions
How difficult is the Rwenzori Central Circuit Trail?
It is a genuinely challenging high-altitude trek, particularly the optional summit push to Margherita Peak, which involves glacier travel and generally requires ropes and crampons. Good fitness, prior hiking experience and proper acclimatization are strongly recommended.
Do I have to summit Margherita Peak?
No, summiting is optional. Day 7 offers a choice between a relaxed hike down to Kitandara Hut or a demanding summit push, so trekkers can choose based on their fitness, acclimatization and comfort with technical terrain.
What is the highest point on this trek?
Margherita Peak, at 5,109 meters on Mount Stanley, is both the trek’s highest point and the highest point in Uganda.
What is Bujongolo?
Bujongolo is a historic rock shelter along the route near Guy Yeoman Hut, notable as the site of the pioneering 1906 Rwenzori expedition led by the Duke of Abruzzi, one of the first parties to systematically explore and map the range.
What gear do I need for the summit attempt?
Ropes and crampons are generally recommended for the push to Margherita Peak, given the glacier crossing involved. These can typically be arranged through your trekking operator or rented locally.
